Good illustration. We need to become more innovative in our thinking concerning outreach (remember the seminar we had on side door ministry...have we totally accepted/applied that yet?) and other church issues. The church is not contained within the box (the building) but is contained within each of us...and is only limited by the imagination that God has blessed us with. Through God, all things are possible...including thinking outside the box. Tradition holds us back...not that tradition is always bad (it's not) but it can limit the expanse of your thinking capacity, especially in creative thought. Think of all the inventions or scientific discoveries of our time...how often were these men and women told that their idea(s) would not work, that their thoughts were radical? Well, that's what we see in churches today...tradition gets in the way of innovation and people held in the thrall of tradition either are ambivalent (and therefore not very helpful) toward the innovative change or actually resist it in a passive or aggressive way. We have to reach people for Christ, we have to spread the Good News, we have to find ways to do that within the culture in which we find ourselves. The Word does not change but our approach to others must in order to reach them. I guess this type of thought is easier for our foreign bound missionaries to understand as they take themselves out of our culture into a brand new culture...and they must reach those people within the context of the culture in which they live. Well, sometimes we just can't see that our mission field is our back yard...and how we reach that must be in the context of the culture in which those people live. Jesus didn't spend all His time in the temple...He spent it with the people, at their events, at their homes, at the best (wedddings) and worst (leprosy/death) times of their lives. He reached out to people in the context of their culture...and changed the world. Now, some would say that was the Messiah and He was supposed to do all of that...that doesn't apply to us. But it does because Jesus said it did...go forth and do in my name. And in His name, there is nothing that we cannot do! Trust Him, Love Him, Obey Him!
